Traveling to India always provides the opportunity to paint in places such as Udaipur and Jaiselmer and my boarding school Mayo College. I am so excited about the Marwari horses, polo playing and the races at the Calcutta Turf Club. Here’s are a few of the many paintings I’ve done so far in Plein Air.

Real Academy of Art:
The Process of Painting: People and the Landscape
June 30 - July 2 9a-4p
Real Academy of Art Colorado
This in-depth workshop will show the process of painting and how to use that to your advantage. Starting from the essentials of composition, to learning how to separate value from color, you will see how
thoughtful development of the work creates a more finished product. With exercises on color studies,
thumbnails and demos, I will show you invaluable techniques that will improve your understanding of
what is behind a good painting. My focus is on the process of painting, and I will help you break a very
complex problem down into smaller logical parts that can be addressed one at a time. We will move
beyond copying photographs and instead envision, then create, paintings! Equally importantly, you can
grow tools for painterly choices and stop just rendering detail from your reference.
The workshop will focus on creating landscape paintings with figures. Learn to balance and emphasize
what you want in the painting.
There will be several painting demonstrations by me during the workshop. You will work on your own
painting with individualized teaching and critiques throughout it. We will study historical paintings and
learn about how light affects landscapes and the figure, the basic structures of a landscape painting and
how to compose them successfully in a painting.
Among the topics we will cover are:
- What makes a good design? How to identify the essence of a painting structurally
- The relationship between the design of a painting and its narrative
- Harmonizing color
- How much detail do you need?
- What is the painting about? Why Intent matters?
Cost: $600
